Teams of black coaches played in the ECHL, this is the first time in hockey in America.


Cincinnati, under Jason Payne, beat Joel Martin`s Kalamazoo 2-1 in the regular season game.


It was the first time in the history of professional hockey in North America that the teams had met two black head coaches.


In total there were 7 people, including the only representative of the NHL - Dirk Graham, who worked with Chicago in the 1998/99 season.


It`s great for hockey and the world in general that two coaches of color made this leap, this historic step.


Joel and I have worked hard to achieve this. Children see black players and say: And I can be in their place.


Now they`ve seen the two bench bosses and can say, Here`s another job I can get if I work hard, Payne (pictured left) said.
