Barry Trotz shared his memories of winning the Stanley Cup at the head of Washington.


We lost twice in overtime to Columbus [in the first round in 2018] and then won Game 3 in the second overtime. I walked into the trainer`s room and said: You know what, guys? Now we will win the Stanley Cup!


This is true. And all the coaches looked at me like I was an alien: Calm down, big guy, we only won one match.


A couple of years earlier, before the All-Star weekend break, I was in the Bahamas with my family and met Jacques Lemaire there. Washington had a good team, but we lost to Pittsburgh two years in a row - and they ended up winning the trophy both times. It was unpleasant, psychologically difficult, because it felt like we were close.


And then in the Bahamas I meet Lemaire. We agreed to have coffee, and I tell him: I have a good team. I think we can win the Stanley Cup. But I need a deciding factor. You`ve won the trophy several times. Is there anything that actually helped you win?


He looked at me, thought for a second and replied: We didn`t have to play the Islanders. We`ve never been able to beat the Islanders.


I expected to hear something very important. And he basically told me that all you need is a little bit of luck.


And then Panarin hits the post, and we win in the second overtime. And I understand, I know for sure that we will win the Stanley Cup. I felt it. And after that, I was very calm throughout the playoffs. I knew all along that we would win. Even in the Tampa series. I was calm and just knew, " Trotz said.
